Michael Cuffaro

My research interests are mainly in the philosophy of science and in the history of philosophy of science. I'm particularly interested in issues having to do with the relation between physics, computation and information. With Michael Janas and Michel Janssen, I am the co-author of Understanding Quantum Raffles: Quantum Mechanics on an Informational Approach — Structure and Interpretation. I'm the co-editor, with Sam Fletcher, of the edited volume, Physical Perspectives on Computation, Computational Perspectives on Physics, and the co-author, with Amit Hagar, of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Quantum Computation. Aside from this I have published on the topic of scientific explanation, on Kant, on Hobbes, on Frege, and in the areas of legal and political philosophy. I have published in The British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Science, Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics, History of Philosophy Quarterly, Politics Philosophy and Economics, and other journals.

I am an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and external member of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (though I live in Montreal). I received my Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, and then my Master's degree in Philosophy, from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. I received my Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. I completed postdocs at LMU Munich's Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy and at the University of Western Ontario's Rotman Institute of Philosophy, and have been a Senior Visiting Fellow of the Descartes Centre at the University of Utrecht as well as an external memeber of the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Vienna.

I'm also an experienced software developer and an experienced musician (bass player, mostly) and songwriter. Links to some of my older and more recent recordings (which are added to and updated every once in a while) are available on this site. For more information on my work in software development, see my GitHub and LinkedIn pages.
